Posted by: | CommentsOn my recent road-trip out to Los Angeles, I met a man who was down on his luck and stranded at a truck stop in Oklahoma City. His car was broken down. His wife and three children were sleeping in his car and he was desperate for a solution.
As he approached me, I rapidly sized him up, as he began to tell his hard-luck story. I could tell that he wasn’t trying to hustle me. He was just one of the unfortunately too many down-and-out on their luck people that we encounter on road-trips.
As he told me his story of misfortune — I asked him, “How much do you need?”
Reluctantly, he began to stutter and replied, “Sir. I’ll take anything you can spare. Even some spare change will help.”
He assured me, that his wife and children were as safe as safe can be, in a truck stop late at night — so, I told him that if he wanted to come into the truck stop for a cup of coffee, I would see what I could do to help him.
As it turned out — he had lost his job and his home in Houston, Texas, and was headed to Kansas City, Kansas. They were carrying all of their possessions that they could pack into an older, high-mileage, dodge sedan. He had just spent the last of his money on food and gas at the truck stop — when his car broke down with a mechanical failure — the night before.
He had spent most of the day trying to pan-handle enough to get his car repaired. So, I asked him, “how much do you have right now?” He said that he had almost twenty dollars — to feed the family when they woke up.
As we talked over coffee — I was finally able to assess that he would need about $300 to get his car repaired so that he could get on the road again.
I told him, that I wasn’t going to give him any cash — but that if he was interested, I would give him a formula that he could use — and that if he would apply the formula — and take action as I directed to him, that he would be able to raise more than the necessary $300 that he needed to get back on the road — and that he could do it within the next few hours.
I could see his hope and aspiration fall from his face, as he began to shed a tear, and started to say something like, “Sir, you don’t understand. I’ve been begging for hours and haven’t even gotten $20 yet!”
I stopped him mid-sentence, and told him that “If you use the thinking that got you less than $20 in several hours, and the thinking that got you stranded with your wife and children sleeping in your car — I agree. You’re hopeless.”
Then, I said, “If you’re willing to listen to my thinking — beyond your better judgement, and try what I tell you to do — you’ll have more than you need within a short time. AND, you can use the same formula when you get to Kansas City, to start rebuilding your life.
We sat in the restaurant for about 45 minutes and he took notes using my pen and a handful of napkins to write on. Then, I gave him my business card, and said, “When you get to Kansas City — call me, and tell me what happened.”
I hadn’t heard from the man for a few weeks — when, yesterday, I received a phone call from him.
He was very excited! He told me, that within one hour and a half, after I left him, he used my formula. He raised $360.00 and got his car fixed early the next morning.
He also said, “After I got to Kansas City, I began to see how I could use the formula here. Over the next six days — I raised $5662.67. Rented a house. Got a job. Furnished the house. Got my kids enrolled into school. And, things are looking up!”
He said that he wanted to send me a gift, or part of the money that he raised — because he was grateful that I had helped him.
I told him, “Keep the money. I don’t need it. I’ve got the formula. And, the next time you see someone in need — offer to buy them a cup of coffee, and IF they are willing to follow your directions — just pass on to them, the same formula that I passed on to you!”
